MAMA (horror film)
Concept art/ Matte Painting MRX Fx
I was tasked with helping to block out the design of the various other-wordly 'portals' the supernatural apparition uses to enter the protagonist's home.
It involved designing items that looked anywhere from a subtle water-stain/water damage all the way to an ethereal horrific tear in reality. The design required a varying degree of subtlety as the creature begins to reveal itself throughout the story.
The actual matte painting(s) was done with the water stain in various states so it could be animated and revealed by the compositor.
I added some images of the actors/creature below to provide a greater amount of context for the scene.
Matte Painting:
I worked collaboratively on this shot with my dmp supervisor to build the branches and tree batches for what the director wanted compositionally and built various snow/branch elements for projection in Nuke. There were numerous plates that needed the branches cutout and rebuilt into projection-compatible ‘clumps’ that could be used for the driving sequence during the intro of the film.
